Another handy aspect of Photoshop is that is has superior selection techniques. I haven't tried many programs actually, but I know Photoshop well and can get a lot out of it.
When replacing colors, it's handy to use the paintbucket and uncheck the "contiguous" box. This replaces all instances of the color in the whole image. The magic wand has a similar option, in case you want to move or delete all instances of a color.
Regarding anti-aliasing, besides setting tool tolerances to 0 and unchecking "anti-alias", you'll also want to edit your preferences for resizing. You want "nearest neighbor," not bicubic or bilinear. You'll find this under the menus in Edit/Preferences/General/Interpolation. This makes jaggy rather than blurry resizes, and requires less touch-up.
Photoshop can be daunting what with all these different settings, but if you're going to learn a program, why not learn a robust one that can handle many different types of projects?

Speaking of photoshop. Does anyone know if/how you can do the following things in PS7:
- draw lines from point a to point b without anti-alias - select 2 colors and do a fill "dither" and/or other methods for speeding that up
I'm not having much luck with the help files or google right now.

(you'll have to change colours manually), i found this very handy for my low color monster portraits.

learn some not-so-obvious photoshop shortcuts to improve speed!
SHIFT + tool shortcut -> toggle sub tool (thankgod) (mainly for selections/marquees, and brush/pencil) ALT + eyedropper -> set background colour x -> toggle foreground / background colour (great for 2 color drawing, eraser is slower!) alt + marquee -> make centered selection (great for circles) whilst using pencil, hold ALT to use eyedropper CTRL + SHIFT + C -> copy merged selection (from several layers) hold down spacebar -> drag/pan image
create gradients for a palette - image->mode->indexed color... - flatten layers? click ok. - forced->custom. - click and drag multiple swatches

I use photoshop for mostly my..non-pixel art. mspaint is good for drawing the basic outline and coloring and shading is really easy in photoshop.

Bring out the GIMP.
Actually, I use Photoshop. I just wanted to say: bring out the gimp. Twice even. I likes my layers. I couldn't even imagine working without layers anymore. Heck, that goes for Illustrator and InDesign, too. I do remember the old Mac Paint days, though. Black pixel or white pixel, hmm, decisions, decisions...

just thought I'd add something of use about photoshop: when you work on a picture and don't want to zoom out all the time, just goto Window > Document > New Window, and you'll get an auto-updating window at 100%. Very nice.

Photoshop is good for a lot of things, but as soon as you need to animate characters or you need to have a little more control of the palette, I would recommend ProMotion. Actually if all you want to do is draw pixel graphics then you wouldn't need anything else. Just my $0.02 By the way, I find it interesting how many people won't use a program because it costs something like $20 but see no problem in using Photoshop which is d*mn expensive.

Been very busy lately (with school, work, and 3 pixel projects... Austin's siggy, that Pixelation T-shirt thingy, and a thing for Pep that I have been really lazy about lately) but I really need to get around to working up another tutorial. A photoshop one would take a while, but I'll add it to my list-o-stuff-to-do. ;D

I'm significantly late for this thread, but I suggest GGale for animation, and Photoshop/PsP7 for still stuff or colour guide frames. For indexed digital drawing, I suggest Deluxe Paint 4 AGA on an Amiga.

IMO, Photoshop can't be beat for pixeling...but it's palette manipulation abilites are severely lacking. I pixel everything in photoshop, then pull it out and paste it in ProMotion to color correct and jimmy with palettes. Oh, and to animate too.
