Just a quick thought-- Whenever folks post threads like "what's a good mac or pc pixel program?" I always get the feeling that the real question is "what paint program will magically transform me into a pixel god?"
So everybody, here's your answer: A computer program is only a tool, not all that different from your brain. Photoshop or Paintshop Pro will not make you a pixel god-- you make yourself a pixel god. Hell, I'd argue that you don't even need a computer to pixel. Example: go buy a cheap garage sale coffee table. Now head on down to Home Depot and buy a bunch of small, colored tiles. Using your brain and a tube of Superglue, apply the tiles to the top of the table.
Whoopee! You are now a pixel artist (and a furniture designer to boot!).
Think outside of the box (computer) and compete with yourself. You'll be shocked how fast you improve.

You have a point but I have to disagree somehowe, heh. I do not pixell much or well but I believe that GraphicGale makes it way easier and faster to pixel than Paint (not to mention gluing colourful tiles on the table, which would be BTW hard to edit). Plus it has layers and many other options that can help to draw better and more precisely.

Okay so I have to admit I have made this scratchy sig for yourself in MSPaint :] And everything I does starts with MSPaint and it si way batter than Photoshop or PSP which are to big But still GraohicsGale which I've recentyl started to use is a fair compromise between simplicity and clear design of MSPaint and Photoshop :]

I use both MSPaint and Graphics Gale a lot. MSPaint is great for quick work or edits. However Graphics Gale is far far better for animation (since it actually supports animated formats) and for more complicated pieces (say like my huge pic I posted) the layers are a wonderful feature to have.

I use a simple graphics editor with little to no fancy crap, just Circle, Fill, Line, Rectangle, Draw. It has a pallette of 256 colors.
It's called the Picture Editor of The Games Factory.

I use Photshop cause that just happens to be the software I've used for ages for everything graphical.
Like you all say, all you really need are the most basic features of a paint package to make pixel art. But I have to say having some of photoshops features at my disposal are a real bonus, such as layers to keep line art, various shades or items etc seperate, Being able to easily select every pixel of a certain colour and change it etc.
But in the end, like ya say it doesnt make any difference what software you use, the effect will be exactly the same.
So there u go, my 2 cents ;D

i have used photoshop for as long as i have been using 'real' computers, before that i used 'rev2' and 'draw' on the acorn for my product design GCSE.
I don't think that using photoshop or PSP is overkill (as described on other current threads) especially now that you can pick up a copy of photoshop elements for around £60 retail or £30 if you're a student.
It's a very subjective choice as to what software you choose to use for your art. I personally like the fact that i can import and export in nearly any format to photoshop, and the pallette isn't restricted. For me the array of features in photoshop mean that i don't have to worry about anything but the graphics i'm producing. plus i can exploit all the features on my 12x12 tablet ;p
I don't think that anyone can dispute the fact that photoshop is great for any kind of graphic work, it's a pre-requisite of any graphic design studio, and is THE industry standard.
Is it the best tool for pixelling? it's wrong to say that an app that only supports 256 colours is as good for pixel art as photoshop, because immediately restrictions are placed upon you by the colour range.
but you can get the same results in most other graphic packages, it's just that photoshop makes everything a whole lot easier and quicker.

I've never said that Photoshop is uncomfortable for everyone. I just say that for me working in Photoshop slows me down 2 times and I feel uncomfortable working with this program. It's to heavy, as simple as that. I've never exceeded 20 colours so 256 seems enough :] IGGale is good for pixelart not for editing photos.
