<mod> Could you two continue this on private messages? </mod> but no..seriously, I don't care. It just looked like fun. And I agree, get rid of the archives. And Frozen, have you talked to Tenshi? Because me and him (Me mostly ) thought up some ideas on how to help Pixelation on IRC.

oops, sorry for double-posting, I can't edit my post, but the mod is for an alternate search function, which doesn't create all those tables especially for searching.

About the NBE, I would like to keep it if at all possible. I agree with bedelf, in that Pixelation is a high-traffic board, and the NBE helps me keep track of the ones I'm interested in. Perhaps another way to keep track of specific pages is in order?

O.k. first of all I think we should know about avg traffic for the board... there are some very good high traffic servers runnin on very low funds (i.e. hostrocket is still ofering the 50 gigs transfer offer (very cheap and very reliable hosting... i have a site there for some years now...) and I don't expect pixelation to eat up this much though i can easilly expect round 15-20 gigs a month) Reducing the templates and css stylesheets will help A LOT as this load every time the board is seen... also reduce all possible "decorative" parts (non useful images, change img buttons for real form inputs and so) Also threads should be purgued time to time and reduce thread searchs to a short range... this will add both, speed and reduce mysql load in both space and query time... I don't think threads get too many views in a month or so

I think we need a way to delete all users who still have a 0 post count after 30 days this would eep all those empty accounts from cluttering the memberlist but still give people a reasonable amount of time to post something.
I like the current phpBB boards and I think we should stic to them but definitely cut down on some stuff in the templates and such. And of course dump the archives they've already been autopruned down to almost nothing.
And I'm not sure how much effect, if any, this would have but get rid of BB code since I don't think it's used much. Most people use html for posting images because of the double size thing and I don't think the other other stuff is really that useful.

Gotta agree with Noadi, those lurkers should either get lost or come out of the shadows. There's nothing to be afraid of, and if they've been around for thirty days without posting, they probably won't be posting anytime soon. Of course, that should only go with people with 0 posts. Would making the sections like the old way lower bandwidth? Because I visit all four sections just about daily, so that's more than visiting only two sections isn't it?

Heh, if you're gonna take apart the board, or get a new one... you could at least change the color. That blue is just crazy for a visual art board. I think people would get used to it pretty fast. It's just annoying how different things always look on the boards. Since it's a game art related forum, you should take into account the fact that very few pixelers use dark blue as a transparent background placeholder (white or magenta are common (but please don't use magenta)), and that that dark blue doesn't occur very often in game backgrounds. Light backgrounds might help things.

Hi !
Why not modify the subSilver theme and replace ALL images with text ?!? This would be lot less traffic i guess... if you want to, i can do it

Lots to reply to.. heh
Ah, yeah, that should be easy enough. Looking at the registered users, over half of them have less than 10 posts, and more still haven't posted in ages. Might just have SQL go through and kill off anybody who hasn't posted in over 2 months or something, that should help significantly.
Usually, it takes about 5-10gb per month, although I have in the past seen it go as high as 15gb. Takes up more than the rest of swoo.net combined. heh <edit> This month, it took up over 20 megs in 15 days. If I had let it continue, it would have eaisly broken 40 megs by the end of the month. </edit>
Yes, he sent me an e-mail. Any other ideas besides what I listed in my original post? heh
I checked that one out, and it turns out almost none of the board traffic comes from e-mail being sent. The VAST majority (88+%) comes from the .html files produced by viewtopic.php and viewforum.php. Mail makes up about 1%. So I don't think we'll have to get rid of that. heh
Again, most of the traffic is from HTML. Images, surprisingly, take up less than even mail does - about 0.8% of the total. So no need to start stripping the board. down to text-only.
Problem with low-cost webhosting services is that they tend to make up the money one way or another, either by cutting the features (and swoo.net is heavy on the requirements that most sites don't need - subdomains, need lots of programming-specific stuff, domain pointers and redirection, etc), or by stacking up a lot of virtual accounts on the same server (which is fine for most purposes, but would cause sites like pixelation to be noticably slower), or by sticking on restrictions on what type of content you can have (ie, no hosting different sites on subdomains). The one I've got now is working fine, although I might upgrade to another plan with higher bandwidth if needed.
Thanks for all the input, guys. All this stuff should eaisly cut the bandwidth back, hopefully enough that it'll clear up the problem outright. Any more ideas?
Also, feel free to start up new threads for the off-topic stuff (or to post some art, whatever) if you want. Anybody should be able to start threads here, so have at it while we have a bit of downtime. heh

I don't think hostrocket offers low capabilities hosting... 10 mysql dbs, unlimited subdomains, perl, php, zend optimizer, includes xmb board (though you can run your own...)... take a look on the specs: hostrocket.com/products/shared_econ.htmAlso it could be a good moment to detach pixelation boards as a stand alone domain if sharing the host is the problem... so it has the full tansfer rate for itself.

Frozen, you can always set up a donation scheme with paypal. For sure some members can spare a few bucks to keep this thing running. Most important is, that it's voluntary though. Some drops to cool off the stone
