Heh.. never thought I'd see somebody talking abut the 80/20 rule on an art board. Hmm....I can see how it'd have applications to art - in a typical game, a minority of the graphics would be viewed a majority of the time, no? That's why there would be much more focus on the graphics for the main character, for instance, than for an obscure character. But then again, maybe artists just express it like this, rather than call it the 'Pareto Principle' or '80/20 rule' You're absolutely right. The VAST majority of the traffic (strangely enough, right around 80%) comes from 2 files - viewtopic.php and viewforum.php. Most of the traffic is coming from the HTML files that the HTML Processor spits out back to people viewing the board. That's what we're going to be focusing on in the fix. Among other things, it is generally recommended that HTML tags are placed in lower-case (e.g. <img> instead of <IMG>) because this allows for better compression. -Sirp.

I like to be able to be notified when someone replies to MY messages, but dont see the use of notification of all messages (if that is the option you mention?)...
I like the existing board colours, things do look good against the dark blu... maybe this would be a good time to change the title banner after all tho!

That's exactly how you crash a board and its bandwidth.

Luckily, Pixelation didn't allow emoticons. Thank God, I hate those things. ;D ;D ;D

The easiest way to reduce the bandwidth usage of these two files is quite simple - reduce the number of replays/threads per page.
Instead of 50 threads per page maybe 20... and instead of 50 replies maybe 15 (I don't know the actual numbers).
Most people already know the other threads (on page two) and most people have already read the begining of a thread (and therefore choose to jump onto page 3).

How about 'charge the users'? I'd pay $20 annually, and it'd be nice to cut out some of the half-ass registrees.

If you cut down the number of replies per page, thereby increasing the number of pages, a "Jump to Last Read reply" functionality would be nice and should also cut bandwidth drain some.

Have the boards locked out so only registered users can view the boards. If you allow guests to read the topics it can cause unwanted bandwidth. I have found in the past that doing something like this can heavily cut unneeded bandwidth. Also sorry if someone already posted this

I think that you'd need to keep a part of the boards open to unregistered users, ie the community board, so that people who are curious can still see what the boards are all about and if they are interested, join.
There was a jump to last post function on the old board, or at least i think there was..?

I have no problem with donating money but we have plenty of users who are in their teens, and thus reliant on their parents to pay or at the least give them permission to pay. By charging you might end up cutting off a lot of the younger pixelation users which is the majority of members.
I'm not an advocate of locking any part of the board because I think it will scare off people who might have wanted to join otherwise. If you are going to lock the board to non members than you need to keep the general section and the community section open so anyone can see what pixelation is all about. Just the community section wouldn't work because it doesn't contain as much art and wouldn't fully represent pixelation.

Noadi has a point. I am able to donate a bit for pixelation. I'm not in my teens (heh, already 15th September have turned 20) but still most of my funds come from my parrents Anyway I have my own money and i could donate, still not much. There also comes internationalization. what cost you sth. in USA somewhere else may be painful price. I knwo most of you don't realise this, heh and will never unless you will go to other countries where people earn less and things costs less :] Anyway make donations possible as it will not cut off anyone from pixellation but still would proide money -many people here are willing to do so, so .. do so :] Anyway keep up good work team, pixelation is what heaven should look like.

Well, why not just make a paypal with benefits if you donate? That way those that can will recieve some special privilidge and the people who have no option arent penalized. I'm only 16 and and I have no way of giving money online.

No, if pixelation will do that i will no longer visit the board. i can donate, but really modest amount which i will not mention to not make everyone laugh here. even though still i will but i think it will be unfair to give some benefit. my only benefit would be me knowing that i have somehow contributed to pixelling community.

We're not going to be asking for money, even though we know there ARE people who'd gladly donate some to keep things going. Giving donating people benefits, even if it's something simple, can just cause too many bad vibes between people and start getting into the whole "boo, the people running Pixelation are evil money-grubbing sellouts!!" area which, while stupid, only takes a few people doing it to be annoying, heh...
Plus even if that didn't happen, there's the whole "What if you guys end up with more money than is needed to pay for hosting? You're just going to buy yourself a new computer or something! Bastards!" thing too. Money is just a messy issue, so we're planning to avoid it for as long as possible, though obviously the intentions of people offering to donate are much appreciated, heh.
Anyway, I just wanted to pop in and mention that, heh...like Frozen says we should have things going again around the end of the month.
