Hello everyone, I was about to introduce myself to the board when the forum went down (for a moment there I got uber-paranoid and thought I'd broke it! hehe) Anyhows, my name is chris, I'm a student mom, I'm really old and I've just 'discovered' pixel art so to speak and am trying my hand at it, Im really enjoying it and would like to take it further such as make my own town etc..but unfortunately I can't run before I walk! so here's my first few attempts.. I suppose in one way it's lucky for me the forum went down as I can also post these, which are w.i.p that I would quite like some c+c on, if not to cheeky. umm... I think thats about it. chris www.onemanandhercam.co.uk/

Thats some really nice work you got there, i especially like the depth in the road closed sprite.
The guitar player and the singer look quite flat on that grey bg, try something a little darker to make em stand out. the guitar players trousers look great, easily the best bit of shading in all of your sprites so far.
for someone who has just discovered pixelart you've got a lot of the techniques down to a tee. Selout, lightsourcing, shading etc... great work.
i see your just starting a multi media HND, i just graduated from a multimedia BA so let me know if you need a hand getting to grips with anything.
Oh and welcome to Pixelation (Temp)..!!

Yeah, welcome to pixelation! WOW! Your work blew me away. Especially your acrylic pieces. I also like your 3ds max stuff. (I use that myself.)
I don't have any major crits for the "road blocked" piece, great use of foreshortening. The legs on the sign might need a little perspective correction, because they are all angled the same way. Maybe a little anti-aliasing on them as well.
The frankenstein looks good as well, but he needs some highlights on his shirt.
Again, awesome stuff! I'll have to put you on my "favorite artists" list.

Thanks everyone for the welcomes, I've got a free day today so I'm going to work a little on each of these...I'll post a lil update later. (would it be better for me to post up the updated images to make comparisons.. or replace those images above to save bandwidth?) Trowa.. Thank you! ;D ...hehe I'm not sure how I managed to get the techniques right! yeah they do look a bit flat don't they...I made them to be links for my site and the grey is the background colour, I think I'll try and shadow behind them, or maybe a bit of a scene..dunno I'll play and see what comes up! yeah I'm just starting second year(not quite enough multi-media and far too much interface/web design for my liking, but I want that piece of paper!) Where did you grad from?? how many years did you do? What have you gone on to? Nosey ain't I!! Darksword heh well hopefully I'll post an update later this evening RyDeFly wow thanks! Acrylics and inks was my poison till I discovered the pc! Use max huh?? How long you been using that? Have anywork on-line? I'm just about to go through the transition and start using maya, (I figure its cheaper when I do leave college) doh! oh yeah! good point about the legs, will try and sort that tonight as well as the frankenstein. Well again thanks for replys and c+c you made me feel welcome /me has warm fuzzy feeling inside ;D

thanks TwistidChimp, Really dig your piece too, you have a great style, really clean..very nice. I just popped in to u/l a little update, with the road I'm not really sure where to go with it at the moment, I've got a bit stuck (I've removed legs of signs for time being cos wherever I put them they just didn't seem to sit right) a bit more detail on the girl and frankie few bits added I tried a couple of things with this but again, I wasn't happy with any of them..then I just cleaned I ended up cleaning the layer and tried a drop-shadow? Is that classed as cheating?? ;D and last thing well hope you are still awake after all that chris

The chalk cliff face looks good, reminds me of the isle of wight where the landslide was, (which actually looks like a polar bear when you look at it from bournemouth..!) The little people that you're producing, the doctors and nurses etc look really nice as well. all of your sprites are totally different styles, which is one thing that is rare i think in pixel artists. most tend to stick to 1 or 2 styles which tend to gradually change over time. i don't know which is better, having a more consistent portfolio, or one that is more varied... but you'll probably settle down on a style that suits you best after a few weeks. As for the drop shadow..... i'd personally let the pixel work speak for itself, the preset photoshop effects are all very 'tripodesque' and with the ability you've shown in your sprites you could easily get a better shadow effect by pixelling it by hand anyway. depends what school of pixelling you're from. This is a question that is likely to send your thread way, way off topic and there used to be entire threads that asked the same question on the (old ) pixelation. so i'll try to answer all points of the argument so that hopefully this doesn't turn into a 'what is considered real pixelart?' thread. traditional pixellers will frown upon any filters or effects that are applied to a sprite, prefferring a 'clean' image. not only do effects/filters add expenencially(typo) to colour count, but the final result often looks awkward. And so the benefits of using pixel art (reduced colour pallettes, pixel point accuracy) are lost as soon as you use an effect. Most pixellers though are prepared to accept an image as pixelart if it contains a significant kind of pixel level manipulation, and a thoughtful application of a colour pallette. So is it considered cheating? IMO no, it isn't cheating, you've used an effect to achieve an end result. and as far as i'm concerned, people use the tools that they need to get the job done. However, would the shadow have been better if you did it by hand? judging by your other sprites, yes it would have been considerably better. I hope that answers the question in a 'rounded' way. Oh and your little webicons are nice as well, although the people standing, maybe need a little more volume.
